Days of Our Digital Lives
I spend the majority of my time on a computer. This isn’t much of a surprise, given that I’m a computer programmer. The problem goes deeper, though, because many of my hobbies are also digital in nature. It’s wonderful that the computer is so versatile, but it takes both a mental and physical toll when switching between activities doesn’t even require standing up.
I’m not alone either. Alan’s hobby of responding to Craigslist ads from curious married men forces him to spend hours combing through web pages. The only exercise he gets is walking to and from the car during trips to various highway restrooms around the state. What will he do when even that can be done through the Internet?
“But Mike,” you’re probably thinking as you minimize your porn, “you could always get an outdoor hobby.” Whoa, slow down there, cowboy! Let’s not get crazy here. I’m talking about something much more reasonable, like making all routers powered by exercise bikes. Or having the toilet attached to a treadmill. I’m not sure exactly how it would work, but at least I’m thinking.
